Michaela Callaghan has been preparing recent workshops delving into the sustainability of fashion with a particular emphasis on the use of embellishments used on fashion garments and textiles. Whilst the world has become more aware of eco and environmentally friendly textiles there is often no thought taken on how we decorate actual fashion items. Every season we see designers using embellishments such as plastic sequins, coatings, and man-made trims, all of which are usually far more toxic and damaging to the environment than the base garment itself.

Through this fun recycling workshop Michaela encourages the audience to look for eco alternatives whilst exploring the materials we have around us. Working with found household objects and materials Michaela guides the workshop through ideas of constructing these materials into new forms of decoration.

Michaela encourages the class to discuss their ideas of adornment and questions simply, how we decorate ourselves today.

In light of current Covid lockdowns around the globe and the collapse of the fashion retail market we live in hope that we come out of this period with a stronger emphasis on how we live, what we wear, and how we can look for exciting greener options.
